Important information about upcoming elections and bylaws review
Every ~10 years, ACS Nationals requests that local sections review and update their bylaws. Our bylaws were last reviewed in 2015, so the ACS Constitution & Bylaw (C&B) Committee notified us last year that it was time to review our bylaws.
Hence, this year the executive committee has reviewed our 2015 bylaws and prepared the updated bylaws. The updated bylaws were sent to members on the email distribution list. If you would like to review them, send a message to the Chair. The update is based upon the latest local section bylaw template provided by C&B.
Our Alternate Councilor Chris Whitehead took the lead on this effort, as he is a current member of C&B. The proposed, updated bylaws were submitted for preliminary review by C&B over the summer. C&B found no conflicts between our local section bylaws and the national ACS governing documents (i.e., nothing about how our local section functions is in conflict with the Society).
Of note, the most substantive changes were at the recommendation of C&B: (i) reducing the number of standing committees given our recent struggle to find volunteers to chair them; and (ii) lowering the number of member signatures required to propose an amendment to our bylaws from 50 to 25.
Next Steps: Our local section will vote on the proposed bylaws in November during our normal annual elections.
